Mortal Kombat Movie Trailer: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

5. Up - A Solid Cast

One aspect of the games that the movie needs to get right is the leading and supporting cast. The series' characters are a significant part of what makes it work, so to see them poorly translated to screen would be an absolute disaster. Thankfully, from what can be seen in this trailer, they are heading in the right direction.

The characters of Sonya and Jax - played by Jessica McNamee and Mechad Brooks - appear to perfectly capture the militaristic vibe of their characters, which is the right choice. Plus, Josh Lawson's charismatic version of Kano looks set to be a fan-favourite, just like he is in the games.

Additionally, Ludi Lin and Max Huang both look brilliant in their respective roles as Liu Kang and Kung Lao. The former looks set to have a great turn as the series' major protagonist thanks to his youthful look and impressive fighting skills.

Finally, Chin Han's appearance as Shang Tsung looks very impressive, as he commands authority and has a great costume. It's easy to see how he will act as a fantastic villain.

Ultimately, the cast seems to be full of unknown actors - save for Chin Han - and this is an excellent decision as there is no stunt casting to distract from the story or characters. This is quite rare in Hollywood movies, so it's refreshing to see.
