My Evolution As A Filmmaker In 10 Films

5. A Thinker's Guide to Pornography

Summary: Harry and Oscar, with the help of various talking heads, try to work out whether Pornography is ethically right or ethically wrong. Best Bit: Check out the poster on the wall behind a certain hypocritical talking head€ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNqrYeUb4ms What I Learned: This was, again, something of a watershed moment. This was an assignment for an ethics class, and brought about a very partnership- H3O Video, an outfit which produced 6 €˜educational films€™ ranging from charity work and Shakespeare, to Food Waste and Cookery. But this was an opportunity to hone the documentary format that had intrigued me during €˜The Genetics Debate€™. And once again, it allowed me to carve out something of a signature style. My partner and I balanced the serious stuff with irreverent, awkward humour. Comedians always say to write/perform what makes you laugh, and that€™s exactly what we did. Though it produced mixed reactions later on, this was a sure-fire winner. In fact, we were congratulated by the Headmaster. I don€™t think he watched the documentary, let alone knew what it was about! But the tricky stage for me was editing the talking heads- you€™ve got to get the important points across and set moods and tones with what is being said, and most importantly keep the audience€™s attention.
