1. Bryan Cranston
Cranston has won no less than three Primetime Emmy awards for his turn as Walter White in the absolutely superb Breaking Bad and its for his ability to portray duality. On the one hand, White is mild-mannered, loving and generous, but all the while the abyss is looking into him, and he succumbs more and more to that darkness within, destroying the lives of those he cares about. And it really isnt a massive leap from Walter White to Jim Gordon; theres just a tiny difference in motivation. Make no mistake, Walter White is an extremely tough role to sell; to make us simultaneously like him immensely and still revile him somewhere inside. If a new director wants to tackle Gordon as a more multi-faceted character, to take a look at the characters personal demons as is so often the focus of the comic books, I cant really see a more apt choice than Cranston. The look is there, the voice is there, the astounding ability hes even at the perfect age to play what Id consider to be main canon comic book Batmans Jim Gordon. And given Cranstons rising Hollywood profile of late, as well as his previous turn as Jim Gordon in the animated Year One movie, Id say the next two to four years is probably the perfect window for this casting decision.
