20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies That Flopped At The Box Office
14. I Saw the TV Glow
Even with the backing of the mighty A24, I Saw the TV Glow was always going to be a tough sell to the mainstream, no matter that Jane Schoenbrun's haunting psychological horror film is one of the most visually distinctive and downright unforgettable genre offerings of the 2020s so far.
It ultimately ended up grossing a total of just $5.4 million, barely half its estimated $10 million budget.
Granted, one can't imagine A24 was expecting Schoenbrun's film to post gangbusters numbers - especially with a limited release - and it was likely a decent performer on streaming, especially considering its low-key theatrical run.
Most importantly, though, its box office hasn't stopped Schoenbrun getting more films made, given that her follow-up Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is already deep in post-production.
Perhaps tellingly, though, A24 isn't partnering with Schoenbrun this time, and Mubi has instead stepped in both distribute and finance.
