14. Saccharine
Relic director Natalie Erika James makes one hell of a return with her third feature Saccharine - a devilishly dark satire of modern body image anxiety, following a young woman (Midori Francis) who participates in the bizarre weight loss craze of eating human ashes.
While some might argue that James' film is a little too ambitious for its own good with the many themes it attempts to tackle, and it's certainly not interested in subtlety, it does deliver a bracingly intense takedown of modern convenience culture and social media trends.
What really makes Saccharine sing, though, is the wince-inducing practical effects and especially Midori Francis' outstanding performance as protagonist Hana, whose ash-eating soon enough causes her to be terrorised by the ghost of the person whose remains she's devouring.
Above all else, it's confirmation that James' masterful debut wasn't a mere flash in the pan, cementing her as one of the most intriguing voices working in contemporary horror.
