The past year has made it desperately clear we need a moratorium on horror films called "Good Boy," because this savage black comedy-horror - also called "Heel" in some territories - shouldn't be confused with the dog-as-protagonist one from last year.

Instead, Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough star as a deranged married couple who abduct a teenage criminal (Anson Boon) and radically attempt to rehabilitate him in the basement of their remote home.

It's a sicko premise and one which filmmaker Jan Komasa tackles with skill, deftly pinballing the tone between anxious tension and gallows humour.

But it's first and foremost an actors' showcase - Graham in particular is expectedly brilliant as the twisted patriarch with hidden complexity, while Riseborough and Boon put in fine work in their own right.

Delicately balancing its genuine examination of rehabilitation with more pulpy genre fun, Good Boy is a film that could so easily not have worked, yet it's ultimately a smoothly controlled and ludicrously entertaining genre exercise.
