19. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was designed as the lead-in to a climactic fifth entry into the franchise which would bring Cillian Murphy's original protagonist Jim back into the fold.
However, those plans were thrown into disarray at the start of this year when The Bone Temple unexpectedly flopped at the box office, enough that the next film's future was said to be in doubt, despite Sony already announcing the fifth movie previously.
Though director Danny Boyle spent a while expressing optimism that 28 Years Later III would get made sooner rather than later, he most recently said that the sequel was on the "back burner," despite Alex Garland's script being complete.
And honestly, it wouldn't surprise many if Sony has gotten cold feet over The Bone Temple's commercial failure, enough that this sequel never actually materialises.
Here's hoping we're wrong, though, because a franchise-capping finale with Murphy as the lead once again is something fans have been fantasising about for almost a quarter-century.
