10 MORE Horror Movies You Probably Haven't Seen But Should
5. Anatomy
Although Anatomy starts off like a frat comedy, it soon takes a stomach-churning turn. When medical student, Paula, is accepted into the same university as her acclaimed grandfather, she hopes to honour his legacy. But after she recognises one of the facility's cadavers, she stumbles upon a conspiracy within the medical profession.
Due to the subject matter, it's no surprise that Anatomy is outrageously gruesome. Having said that, the bloodiest scenes are often conveyed calmly and playfully. (After all, blood and guts are pretty normal in a surgeon's life.)
However, the way the killers casually chat while disembowelling their prey without anaesthetic conflicts with expectations, making these sequences astoundingly grotesque. Watching the victims being executed with calm indifference makes it feel like something out of a night-terror more than just a piece of cinema.
Though it's difficult to juggle multiple genres, Anatomy pulls it off, playing out like a psychological drama before suddenly transitioning into a whodunnit slasher or a full-blown body-horror the next. This decision works in Anatomy's favour since there are times where it feels like a grounded mystery thriller, so viewers aren't expecting it when the characters are abruptly decapitated or have their fingers peeled off.
