Distant Horizon

Many of the best and most iconic martial arts films take their sweet time getting to the good stuff. However, Versus decided to take the opposite approach, kicking off with a samurai battling against a legion of flesh-chomping ghouls.

Rather than taking a breather from that heart-pounding clash, Ryuhei Kitamura's fantasy thriller moves onto another undead duel. Then another, and another. In fact, nearly every single scene involves a face-off between heroes, gangsters, zombies, and gangster zombies.

Whether the ensemble is duking it out with their fists, swords, or guns, the fight choreography is diverse and gleefully over-the-top, so viewers should never get desensitised to it. Just when it looks like the fights couldn't get any more ridiculous or cartoonish, the next scrap finds a way to top itself.

Despite the shoestring budget, the special effects for the zombies are top-notch, allowing for all sorts of sensational throw- downs, transformations, and executions.

Versus may be bare-bones when it comes to the plot, but the hyper-stylised gunplay, splatter-gore, and wire-work kung fu should have anyone utterly enthralled from beginning to end.
