2. The Call

The Call
Netflix

In this Netflix original, a young woman, Seo-Yeon, receives a phonecall from a distressed stranger, Young-Sook, who lives 20 years in the past. After doing a bit of googling, Seo-Yeon discovers Young-Sook is to be murdered soon after the call took place, compelling her to prevent the caller's death. Though she succeeds, Seo-Yeon's interference has irreversible ramifications.

Despite the trippy premise, The Call is surprisingly relatable since it perfectly captures the feeling of helplessness. Rather than facing a direct danger, Seo-Yeon is threatened by something that doesn't exist in her timeline. Changes in the past cause Seo-Yeon's acquaintances in the present to be erased from existence. Worst of all, Seo-Yeon recognises she's responsible for this dire situation, purely because she saved a helpless stranger.

The concept isn't just genius, but keeps the tension at its peak. No matter how innocent things seem, any of Seo-Yeon's friends or family can be ripped out of the time in an instant depending on Young-Sook's actions.

Based on its thought-provoking plot, complex characters, and head-scratching twists, it feels like it's only a matter of time before The Call becomes a cult-classic.
