17. Brie Larson's Effect On The Story - Captain Marvel

The crafting of a story in the MCU almost feels like a living organism, in that it is always this changing, evolving entity that is invariably going to look different from how it was first set out, sometimes even right down to the last possible moments.

What affects these changes can be anything, including but certainly not limited to the actors. There was famously barely a script to begin with for Iron Man, and so everything was sort of pieced together as they went, and for Captain Marvel, Brie Larson herself inspired one of the biggest aspects of the entire thing.

The final outing before Avengers: Endgame successfully pulled the rug from under its audience with the reveal that the Skrulls were never the real villain, almost like a more universally welcomed version of Iron Man 3's Mandarin twist.

According to The Reign of Marvel Studios, screenwriters Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve credit Larson for that shift as they were blown away by the lead actor's empathy. Impressed by how Larson "really gives a sh*t", the discussions began about empathy as a superpower. The casting of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers really was a masterstroke on so many levels.
