Oscar 2014 Nominations: 9 Big Surprises (And 1 We Should Have Seen Coming)

2. Golden Globe Favourites Are Completely Ignored

Just because it worked for The Hurt Locker doesn€™t mean it€™s in any way advisable to release an awards hopeful before Oscar season kicks off. No matter how good a film is, it€™s unlikely to carry the momentum of it€™s initial reaction through to February. And that€™s exactly the case with Rush. Ron Howard€™s adrenaline pumping F1 drama is another entry in the pantheon of great sports films.Daniel Brühl made a spot on Niki Lauda, while the blend of CGI, modified racing cars and real stock footage making for closest cinema has come to replicating the thrill of its subject matter. Yet, perhaps due to America's lack of F1 knowledge, the only relation it has to the Oscars is Chris Hemsworth announcing the nominees. Not faring much better was Inside Llewyn Davis, only picking up nominations for Best Cinematography and Sound Mixing. Five years ago even Paul Thomas Anderson couldn€™t stop them, but it seems the quintessentially Coen flick has marked the end (or hopefully pause) of the Academy€™s adorated (which peaked the decidedly un-Coen-y No Country For Old Men). This isn€™t just grumbling either; both films were nominated for a Best Picture award at the Golden Globes, making their absence here incredibly conspicuous.
