Oscars 2014: 10 Movies The Academy Should Consider (But Won't)

1. The Lone Ranger - Best Cinematography, Best Director

The Lone Ranger was without a doubt the biggest disappointment of 2013. Gore Verbinski's western not only garnered a great deal of hate from critics but managed to lose train-car sized piles of money in the process. Some critics have come out of the woodwork in support of the film now that the dust has settled over 2013, but the film will go down in history as a flop. Despite the film's troubled and convoluted script, bloated runtime and ludicrously sized budget, it did offer moviegoers with a few Oscar-worthy aspects, most notably being the movie's cinematography. Say what you want about how bad the movie is, but you can't deny that it looks absolutely breathtaking. Verbinski took home one of the coveted gold statues last year for his animated film Rango, and took the lessons he learned on that film and applied them here. Sure, not all of his efforts payed off, but with incredibly imaginative and engaging action pieces as well as some remarkably well shot visuals, The Lone Ranger was one of the best looking films of the year and definitely deserves a Best Cinematography nomination, at the very least. So, those are my 10 picks for films that will most likely get snubbed at the Oscars, but are deserving of nominations in some categories. What did you think of the list? Were there any films you feel deserve some Oscar gold (but probably won't get any)? Let us know in the comments below! And be sure to follow me on Twitter @JimLovesMovies
