After going through nine hilarious moments from the Best Picture contenders, here's a reminder that not everything is always as funny as it's meant to be. American Hustle has been met with mixed reactions after initially getting a lot of love from critics, and like I've said, it took me two viewings to really appreciate it for what it's worth. But there's loads of scenes that aren't worth a pence, and while Jennifer Lawrence delivers probably her greatest performance in bringing Roslyn to life, in this scene she completely overdoes it. What was played for laughs ended up making me recoil from the horror. Roslyn is a character that is very easy to hate because she's a terrible mother, a complete ditz, and is incredibly nosy. To her credit though, she's also the only one who doesn't hide her true character which is just about the only redeeming quality she's left with. Because singing isn't one of them. After getting Irving in trouble by telling her new mobster boyfriend about a possible rat, there is a scene that sees her cleaning the house and singing "Live Or Let Die" furiously. And really, really badly. Completely pointless, clumsily over-acted... it leaves a bad taste. Must be that garbage she was talking about earlier.
