10. Suffragette
Few films released in 2015 are as important as Suffragette. It seems remarkable that this is the first major film to cover the suffragette movement, but it's a terrific achievement both for director Sarah Gavron and Shame screenwriter Abi Morgan. Wisely, Gavron and Morgan swerve the middle class pinnacle of the movement, focusing instead on the working class activists who were the heartbeat of the drive for the vote. Carey Mulligan could slot into the Best Actress field at the Oscars and only a fool would bet against Meryl Streep making a Best Supporting Actress appearance for her brief turn as Emmeline Pankhurst. With these two acting nominations a distinct possibility, plus a very real chance in the production and costume categories, Suffragette could easily became a major player.
