8. Shock: Star Wars Beats The Martian For Best Film Editing
With Spotlight getting a rather undeserved Best Film Editing nomination, this meant that one film that actually did deserve it was going to get shut out, and that unfortunately was The Martian. Given the high complexity of the production and lengthy but superbly-paced run-time, it was more deserving of the nod than almost every other film in the category (except perhaps for Mad Max: Fury Road). Extra surprising was the fact that Star Wars: The Force Awakens scored a nomination here also, considering that its other four nods were in fairly "soft" technical categories such as Visual Effects, Sound Mixing & Editing, and Original Score.
