After winning three years on the trot, the gift from the filmmaking Gods that is Emmanuel Lubezki is having a break, so someone else finally has a chance to win.

This year should so a lot of newcomers breaking through, with first time nods for the likes of Bradford Young (Arrival) and Linus Sandgren (La La Land), both of whom produced stunning work. Rodrigo Prieto is probably going to get a second nomination too (his first came for Brokeback Mountain), while perenniel nominee Roger Deakins could be an outside bet. Greig Fraser, meanwhile, may split the vote, since he does great work on both Rogue One and Lion. This should represent some of the toughest competition of the entire awards.
