8. Best Visual Effects - Blade Runner 2049
What Should've Won: War for the Planet of the Apes
Blade Runner 2049 is a stunning film, and one that deserved more nominations than it received, so it's hard to begrudge its win here too much. And yet, when it comes to VFX work, War for the Planet of the Apes should've taken home the gold.
The movie once again broke new ground in what can be conveyed through motion-capture, with a sublime performance from Andy Serkis, and combined that with truly great blockbuster action sequences. The managed to add greater nuance to Caesar, both in terms of his appearance - he's aged visibly - and his movements as he becomes older and weaker, with Serkis and his team adding new levels of depth to the character, while achieving a lot with newcomer Bad Ape too (more dialogue and those big eyes only extended the amount of VFX work necessary, and they pulled it off with aplomb).
