Oscars 2019: 16 WTF Moments
16. A Wrinkle In Time Is Featured In The Opening Montage... Because Reasons
The Oscars typically opens with a stirring montage celebrating not only the nominated films but the general year in cinema, and viewers were left baffled at the inclusion of the critical and commercial failure that was Ava DuVernay's fantasy flop A Wrinkle in Time.
Several clips from the film were peppered throughout the brief montage alongside Best Picture nominees and actual successes (such as Bumblebee), in turn reminding everyone that the movie actually existed.
Why was it included, you ask? The answer likely lies in Disney owning ABC (the network that airs the Oscars in the U.S.), as the movie was also advertised extensively in last year's ceremony, even being included in one of its comedy skits.
In light of the film's rejection by critics and audiences alike, though, it does seem rather suspect, even passive-aggressive, for Disney to keep banging the drum for this dud.
