Oscars 2019: Who Should Win Every Award (And Who Actually Will)

12. Production Design

Mary Poppins Returns Lin Manuel Miranda
Disney

Nominees: The Favourite (Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton), First Man (Nathan Crowley and Kathy Lucas), Roma (Eugenio Caballero and Barbara Enriquez), Mary Poppins Returns (John Myhre and Gordon Sim), Black Panther (Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart)

Who Should Win

Roma

You can really take your pick here, because there's a strong argument to be made for every single one of these. But with Roma, production designers Eugenio Caballero and Barbara Enriquez didn't just create something impressive; they recreated, in painstaking detail, the Mexico City of 1971, and helped bring it back to life, like taking something from memory and painting it onto the screen in loving and impeccable style.

Who Will Win

The Favourite

The Oscars love a period piece for this award, and this year they don't come much bigger than The Favourite. Yorgos Lanthimos creates an opulent paradise for his royal players to parade around in. The bedrooms, halls, and grounds are all lavish, and packed with smaller details too, that should really catch the eye of voters. Its design is one of the many things that stands out about the film, and after winning the BAFTA and Art Directors Guild Award, it's the frontrunner in a stacked category.
