Oscars 2021: 10 Best Picture Movie Contenders

1. Minari

Promising Young Woman
A24

Steven Yeun stars in this acclaimed drama from Lee Isaac Chung about a family of South-Korean immigrants who attempt to make a life for themselves in Arkansas in the 1980's.

Featuring some superb performances, Minari provides a touching and intimate portrait of the immigrant experience and family and cultural dynamics. It achieves what many family dramas try and fail to do and that is to portray a genuinely heartwarming and tender representation of familial love. Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri and Youn Yu-jung all do a spectacular job in their roles as the patriarch, matriarch and grandmother of the family, respectively.

It's been very well received by critics due to its arresting, maturely handled and heartfelt story about the struggle of assimilation and change. Minari appeared on many critics' year-end top-ten lists and is scheduled to be released on February 12th of this year, at which point I'm sure it will attract plenty of awards attention.
