Oscars 2021: 10 Best Picture Movie Contenders

3. The Trial of the Chicago 7

Another Netflix original that may be up for a Best Picture nomination is Aaron Sorkin's legal drama The Trial of the Chicago 7, based on the real life story of the anti-Vietnam War protesters who were charged with conspiracy and crossing of state lines at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Bolstered by a reliably strong screenplay from Sorkin, the movie captures the compelling and still very topical nature of the true story with irreverent humour, passion and inspired directorial choices, aided by an ensemble of top-shelf performances from a troupe of established and very talented actors.

While the movie is of course a dramatisation and takes plenty of creative license, it still manages to convey quite effectively the core truths about morality and justice that acted as the beating heart of the real life events.

The passionate energy present in the film, along with the deft execution of its themes will ensure that The Trial of the Chicago 7 has a real shot at scoring some big nominations this awards season.
