Oscars 2021: Ranking The Best Picture Nominees From Worst To Best
1. The Father
It may not be as flashy or ambitious as the other films on this list, but no movie this season has achieved the level of emotional potency quite like The Father has. Florian Zeller adapts his own play for the big screen and directs a masterful character study of a man slowly slipping into dementia.
Anthony Hopkins' career capping magnum opus is some of his very best work and is a shining example that he is one the greatest performers of all time. He perfectly captures the horrors and haunting misery that come with this disease and at times the film is an unbelievably painful viewing experience.
Honest and genuine in its portrayal of the debilitating illness and told from the perspective of the sufferer, The Father will wear you down throughout in the best way possible and leave you reflecting on the most viscerally emotional experience of the year.
The film is contained and subtle with the simple goal of exhibiting one man's torment. That's all it is and that's all it needed to be. The most raw and powerful piece of filmmaking of the Oscars this year. It cannot be missed.
