Oscars 2022: 10 Possible Contenders For Next Year's Ceremony

1. West Side Story

Regardless of how good it actually turns out to be, there is no denying that West Side Story is the biggest Oscar bait film coming out this year. A remake of a film that needed no remake with visuals clearly designed to emulate the original, West Side Story is riding a wave of nostalgia before anything else.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, who will be looking for his first Best Director nomination since Lincoln, the film will be hoping to repeat key awards that were previously won by the original when West Side Story took home 10 Oscars in 1962.

Starring a primarily unknown cast (the main exception being Ansel Elgort), West Side Story has a lot to do in order to feel fresh enough to make a dent at the Academy Awards. With Spielberg involved and what is likely to be one of the largest financial campaigns for a film next season, you can bet that West Side Story will be a force in the craft categories and most probably the bigger ones too.
