One of the few sight-unseen films left to screen for Oscar voters this year is Steven Spielberg's dubiously "necessary" remake of hit 1961 musical film West Side Story.

Though there's been much debate about how newcomer Rachel Zegler will handle the beloved role of female lead María Vasquez, it's important not to overlook Ariana DeBose in the Best Supporting Actress field.

DeBose will play María's close friend Anita, a part played to Oscar-winning success by Rita Moreno in the 1961 film.

Obviously fans of the original movie will be bending over backwards to compare the two performances, but if DeBose can pay tribute to Moreno while also making the part her own, she could easily follow in her Oscar-winning footsteps.

In the very least, a nomination is likely if the film is good enough, though between those who feel it doesn't need to exist and all the Ansel Elgort controversy, it will be a bit of an uphill fight.
