2. These Movies Will Be 2024's Best Picture Nominees
So much can change over the course of a year, where Oscar favourites fall out of contention and surprise hits surge to the front of the pack, but looking at the early landscape, these 10 movies are all solid shouts to land Best Picture nominations.
Killers Of The Flower Moon and Dune: Part Two are basically dead-cert nominees short of a disaster, Sundance fave Past Lives should make it in if it sustains momentum, and The Color Purple, Oppenheimer, Maestro, and Ridley Scott's Napoleon are all solid bets.
On the bubble we have The Holdovers, which if it's good enough could graduate from merely acting and screenplay recognition to wider Academy love, while Emerald Fennell's (Promising Young Woman) thriller Saltburn is absolutely one to watch.
The biggest question mark, though, is Barbie. Given that writer-director Greta Gerwig's last two movies - Lady Bird and Little Women - both received Best Picture nominations, the odds are most certainly in her favour.
