Daniel Day-Lewis is the king of this technique. While filming My Left Foot, in which he played someone afflicted by cerebral palsy who could only move his left foot, he refused to leave his character's wheelchair, and had to be carried around the set, up and down stairs, and over the wires for cameras and lighting. During filming of 1996's The Crucible, he refused to bathe or shower, claiming it wouldn't fit with his character. Finally, when filming In The Name Of The Father, he locked himself in an abandoned prison cell and made people scream abusively at him and throw water on him.
