3. It's Diverse
Let's face it: generally in big Hollywood blockbusters, we have a lily-white cast of heroes with the odd token person of colour character or actor thrown into the mix. This time around, however, there's a big emphasis on an international cast and rather than playing lip service to that, Del Toro has focused a lot of attention on both American and Asian cities and people around the globe. This means that alongside leading man Raleigh, we have a fantastic pair of people of colour completing the main trio of characters, something which is pretty unheard of for a massive Hollywood summer movie. Not just that, these characters aren't token stereotypes - Pentecost is a commanding yet fair presence and Mako is a protagonist in her own right, a brave and strong woman on a mission to avenge her family's death at the claws of the kaiju and doesn't concede to love interest cliches.
