Paul Giamatti clarifies Larry casting in THE THREE STOOGES

Remember when Peter Farrelly revealed that Paul Giamatti was to replace Sean Penn as Larry in an adaptation of The Three Stooges at MGM? Turns out it was a false story, mostly. Giamatti has told MTV that although he did meet with The Farrelly's for about an hour last summer, he was never committed, MGM delaying the project indefinitely (yup, that old chestnut!) before any offers could be put onto the table. The Farrelly's have since moved on to a Owen Wilson comedy. "Somebody said something to me at Sundance, and I thought were kidding. They said to me, 'Are you going to play Larry in The Three Stooges?' And I thought that was just a joke question somebody was asking me, and I said 'Yes I am.".. "Then it became this whole thing on the Internet. I don't know what's happening on that movie, I had no idea"."After that happened, came to me and said, 'Do you actually want to do it?' And then the movie just went away in general. I talked for about an hour, then the whole thing just seemed to disappear." The reason for the delay was of course the financial problems at MGM, a situation that is keeping Bond 23 and The Hobbit grounded right now, and a problem that doesn't look like it will be solved anytime soon. If by some miracle the MGM situation is resolved tomorrow... Benicio Del Toro would probably still be interested as Moe, Sean Penn might after all play Larry (he only departed the project last summer because he wanted to take a break from acting for personal reasons and is now ready to get back into the groove) but a new actor would be needed to play Curly - as Jim Carrey is long removed from the film.
