Predator: Every Film Ranked Worst To Best

4. The Predator

Whereas all of the films that followed in the footsteps of the original film tended to stray relatively close to formula - that is, main characters caught up directly or indirectly in a hunt - The Predator has no qualms about straying far away from it, instead recontextualizing the species from merely being a culture of sport hunters to being a collective group of genetic engineers who seek to modify themselves for the sake of growing stronger so that they can one day exterminate and overrun Earth.

That alone might be enough to turn off fans who've followed this franchise for three decades now, certainly, but The Predator also takes strides to be a much funnier, more action-packed film than its predecessors, more than happy to pack itself to the gills with one-liners and over-the-top violence in a way that doesn't feel entirely in line with the films it owes its existence too.

Like the genetically engineered super-Predator that arrives on Earth partway through the film, The Predator itself feels specifically and carefully designed for the sole purpose of appealing to a larger audience, even if that means sacrificing much of what fans have grown used to in their Predator movies, the end result being a film that's still serviceable in its ability to entertain - and it will certainly be a crowd-pleaser this weekend - but doesn't actually feel like a Predator film, something that keeps it from being any higher on this list.
