Predicting The Rotten Tomatoes Scores Of 2019's Remaining Blockbusters

9. Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil (60%)

Cats Rotten Tomatoes
Disney

The original Maleficent film was a massive box-office success, raking in over $750 million worldwide. But despite banking all that cash, nobody ever really talks about it. The movie failed to leave a cultural footprint, and it feels like nobody cares about this character or this story, and nobody is really interested in seeing it continue.

The first movie also earned a weak 53% RT score, with Angelina Jolie's lead performance being its standout asset. Plus, with the trio of Aladdin, The Lion King and Dumbo proving that Disney movies aren't impervious to bad reviews, nothing is safe, especially Maleficent - which is hardly a beloved property to begin with - and we can't see the sequel blowing the original out of the water critically.

That being said, Mistress of Evil does look like it's addressing a problem that a lot of critics had with the first - namely, that it tried to paint the evil Maleficent as a misunderstood do-gooder. In the sequel, the title character looks to have a bit more of a dastardly edge, which should make for a more interesting story overall. Plus, like with Double Tap, the film has also garnered some positive early reactions.

All things considered then, there are reasons to be both optimistic and pessimistic about this one's review chances, but based on those early reactions combined with the fact that the story looks better this time around, we expect Mistress of Evil to climb higher than its predecessor - though not much higher.
