Prey: 8 Easter Eggs You Might Have Missed
5. Rite Of Passage
Naru's journey is a rite of passage where she seeks to prove herself as a capable hunter among the Comanche. Facing prejudice and overwhelming odds, she kills the Predator in the film's climax and finally gains the respect of her people.
The concept of a young warrior against the hunter was first introduced in the Dark Horse comic, Predator: Rite of Passage. This one-issue story takes place in Eastern Africa and focuses on a young Maasai warrior. After returning from a hunt against a deadly animal, he finds his village massacred by a Predator. The two duke it out, which ends with the Yautja's death while the warrior earns the respect of the alien's tribe. All of this is recounted by the warrior years later, as an old man.
Naru and the warrior's story share similar narrative beats as both serve as a historical coming-of-age tale where they are forced to deal with the Predator. Our heroine even encounters a female lion, which was the same animal the Maasai fought. The comic's special setting is why fans of the series have long clamored for a Predator film set in the past, which was finally granted to them in Prey.
