Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight: 10 Things You Need To Know
4. It's Set Post-Civil War
Django Unchained was set in the United States' pre-Civil War Deep South, leading to Tarantino describing the film not as Western but a "Southern". Which is a pretty nifty bit of a word play, as well as grounding well, as much as Django could be grounded in the context of a US that was still deeply entrenched in slavery. Some critics were rightly wary about a white guy making a silly genre film about something as serious as slavery, but it appears that Tarantino will be avoiding such hot button topics in The Hateful Eight. Sort of. Regardless of what actually happens during the film, it's definitely set after the Civil War, so we'll have less of that, thanks. Expect him to play up the remaining tension between the warring factions of the early United States, however, what with Samuel L Jackson playing a former Union soldier and Bruce Dern starring as who will probably not be a friendly former Confederate general...
