Ranking 10 Best Cinematographers Working Today

7. Christopher Doyle

1917 George McKay
Focus Features

The only cinematographer on this whose work is primarily based in South East Asian cinema, Christopher Doyle's filmic background is reflected in his use of lush and vibrant imagery and wide lensing. He has worked with prolific directors such as Wong Kar Wai, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Gus Van Sant and Ai Weiwei.

Also known as Du Kefeng (translates to "like the wind") by his Chinese contemporaries, Doyle's style is rooted in his love for art forms such as painting and collage creation. This is reflected in his films' imagery, projects that place less emphasis on technical proficiency and instead focus on artistic and emotional expression.

As a result, he creates a heightened reality with raw, almost gritty artistic flourishes. His lighting is direct and untouched by studio polish, a fact seen in his Hong Kong based projects. The camera movements and angles he opts for are sometimes rough and unnatural and help convey the films' emotional state.

Due to the considerable command of his craft, Doyle has received over sixty awards and a further thirty nominations from various awards ceremonies such as the Cannes Film Festival and the National Society of Film Critics Awards.
