Spidey's solo return was deemed a "modest success" by analysts, considering that it's only barely out-grossed the lowest-grossing Spider-Man movie to date, The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

However, it's doubtful Marvel Studios is worried, as they'll surely strengthen the brand in the upcoming Avengers movies and ensure that the web-slinger's sequel is decidedly more successful. It's hard to blame audiences being wary after The Amazing Spider-Man 2...

Homecoming is a mostly successful return for Spidey, though, convincingly treating him like the kid that he is for the first time, while the film adopts an idiosyncratic, quirky tone that further distinguishes it from previous Spidey movies.

Michael Keaton makes for an entertaining and intriguing villain, Iron Man doesn't steal the movie away, and it leaves plenty up in the air for the next one. A rousing success, even if the stakes feel virtually non-existent and the CGI madness gets a bit much in act three.
