M. Night Shyamalan delivers a storming return to form with this white-knuckle psychological horror that's easily one of his very best films to date.

Back at his mid-budget best, Shyamalan's direction is as taut and suspenseful as it's ever been, while James McAvoy's multi-faceted performance is at once intensely unsettling and unexpectedly hilarious, and Anya Taylor-Joy makes for a highly compelling heroine.

The film rightly sparked intense debate about the ethics of depicting mental illness in horror films, but as a pure genre exercise on its own terms, Split is a delightfully barmy, smoothly controlled thriller.

And with its enormous critical and commercial success, not to mention that incredible final sequel hook, Shyamalan is already hard at work on the follow-up, Glass.
