Wanda has gone all out “Wicked Witch” as the villain of this movie - dropping out of the sky to tear down any innocent bystanders to menace and kill an innocent child. This part of the movie is a big flex of her powers. While the scene ended up being just about her waving her hands and then an explosion happening that makes everyone go flying, it initially started out more complicated than that.
With a giant force field designed to stop Wanda from getting to America Chavez, Wanda cannot just raw power herself to damage the field. She needs to think outside the box and use her powers in smart ways. In this scenario, she tries to find the weakest mind in the army sustaining the force field and influence them to run away scared from the fight. This way she weakened the field from the inside.
When she enters the force field, all hell breaks loose. It is, to be honest, a boring flexing of Wanda’s raw power, filled with obviously CGI bodies and red explosions. Then again, Wanda’s initial strategy of influencing a mind to weaken the force field made it worthwhile. While the next action set-piece is just around the corner.
