If you took a straw poll of lots of film fans, there's absolutely no way any of them could tell you how or why Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland made more than a billion dollars.

Sure, it's a great expression of Burton's imagination, and the world-building in there is second to none, but it's hollow to the point of offensiveness, features awful performances (and not a single likeable character) and it's just not as fun as it thinks. It's just a little too twisted and dark and a little too self-consciously in love with its own quirks to really work.

And yet, it still made a fortune, and we were all forced to endure its woeful sequel.
