Ranking Every DC Comic Book Movie - From Worst to Best

14. Green Lantern (2011)

After over a decade stuck in development hell, Green Lantern finally made his feature-length theatrical debut in this $200m hybrid of superhero origin story and space opera. Unfortunately, the unfocused narrative, two-dimensional characters and over-abundance of CGI at the expense of story saw the movie become one of the most notorious box office bombs of recent years. Despite having four credited writers, narratively Green Lantern is a mess. The plot becomes too dense and over-complicated, often at the expense of the characters and the tone veers uncomfortably from epic intergalactic saga to generic superhero fare, bogged down by a huge amount of exposition to explain the mythology. Ryan Reynolds continues his streak of starring in terrible comic book movies, while the rest of the ensemble fail to make a lasting impression amongst the barrage of often-questionable CGI and the strange decision to make the main villain a cloud, perhaps not the most threatening thing to see in a summer blockbuster.

13. Superman III (1983)

After the critical and commercial success of both the original Superman and its sequel, it was inevitable that the franchise would eventually suffer a downturn in fortunes. Mistakenly deciding to pay more attention to broad comedy rather than a coherent plot and actual superheroics, Superman III offered a drastic drop in quality compared to the first two movies. Essentially playing second fiddle despite playing the title character, Christopher Reeve suffers from a reduced amount of screentime thanks to the presence of Richard Pryor and the never-ending barrage of slapstick comedy that plagues the movie. Which is a real shame, as it is arguably Reeve's best performance in the franchise as he descends into darkness and ultimately a split personality. Audiences were equally indifferent to the new direction of the franchise, and Superman III only grossed a little over half of what its predecessor had earned at the domestic box office.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
