Ranking Every Richard Linklater Film Worst To Best
12. Inning By Inning: Portrait Of A Coach (2008)
Linklater's only documentary feature serves an intimate and insightful look at baseball coach Augie Garrido, who coached baseball down in Austin, Texas and is credited with the most wins in college baseball history.
Linklater, who once played ball in high school and was a close friend of Garrido, digs into the coach's legacy with stark authenticity and humour. It's a strong documentary feature, detailing the ups and downs of an extraordinary and successful career.
Inning By Inning features philosophical musings from the coach himself, as well as an in-depth look at how he and his team faced failure. Sweet without being melodramatic, informative without being alienating, Portrait of a Coach is a nice little addition to Linklater's striking filmography, and is now more powerful and moving given Augie Garrido's untimely death in 2018.
