7. The Witch

There are a couple of great horrors coming out this month, with anthology Southbound getting a limited theatrical release and brilliant British oddity Nina Forever coming to America, but The Witch looks the biggest. This 17th century tale of witchcraft accusations has received impressive critical acclaim since its debut at Sundance last year on the festival circuit and by all accounts it sounds like a thought-provoking, atmospheric chiller with excellent performances and fine period observations. Basically, it sounds the perfect antidote to some of the silliness that seems to define most mainstream successful horrors, and the more attention it gets the better. Release: Feb 19
