4. A Monster Calls

Split XXx 3 La La Land
Focus Features

RottenTomatoes Score: 86% (7.6/10)

Box Office: The $43 million fantasy drama has clawed back $40 million so far, grossing just 20% of its expected opening weekend and being far from the runaway hit Focus were hoping for. It'll probably do well on home video, but it's hard to call this a success out of the gate.

Verdict: Bring some tissues, because this adaptation of Patrick Ness' novel is a deeply affecting examination of a young boy (Lewis MacDougall) coming to terms with the terminal cancer diagnosis of his mother (Felicity Jones).

Liam Neeson does a great job voicing the tree monster who visits the boy to help him on his existential journey, and director J.A. Bayona handles the tone and action superbly, suggesting he'll probably do a stellar job on the upcoming Jurassic World 2.
