Ranking January 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

4. Darkest Hour

Darkest Hour Gary Oldman
Focus Features

RottenTomatoes Score: 86% (7.4/10)

Box Office: Propelled by immense Oscar hype for Gary Oldman's performance, Darkest Hour has more than tripled its $30 million budget to date.

Verdict: Though fundamentally dry "Oscar bait", Darkest Hour is propped up single-handedly by Oldman's inevitably Oscar-winning performance as Winston Churchill.

Oldman completely disappears into the role - as he's a master of doing - making his every second of screen time totally captivating even when he's dealing with fairly workmanlike material.

In many ways a great companion piece to Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, Darkest Hour soars thanks to shrewd casting and fantastic make-up effects.
