Ranking Joss Whedon's Projects - From Worst To Best

3. The Avengers

Joss Whedon arrives at the Los Angeles premiere of
Marvel Studios

Every once in a while, a superhero film comes along to redefine the genre, and everyone else rushes to try and imitate it. When Batman Begins was first released, all of a sudden filmmakers everywhere were scrambling to see who could make the most gritty superhero film with the darkest color palette possible.

The same thing happened when The Avengers came out. All of a sudden superhero films were allowed to be fun and light again. Sure, there's always a certain amount of drama and tension in these kinds of stories (tragedy sort of goes with the territory), but they don't need to be all depressing 100% of the time either. As the Joker famously asked, "Why so serious?"

And Joss Whedon was instrumental in bringing that transformation about. Before The Avengers came out, no one actually knew how well a multi-superhero film would play out on the big screen, logistically speaking. But Whedon, a man relatively inexperienced with blockbuster directing, delivered a movie that was funny and exciting and, what's probably most important to Marvel fans, gave each of the beloved superheroes featured in The Avengers their moment in the sun.
