11. King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword

King Arthur
Warner Bros.

RottenTomatoes Score: 28% (4.6/10)

Box Office: Budgeted at an insanely excessive $175 million, Guy Ritchie's gritty reinvention of Arthurian legend fell massively below opening weekend expectations and to date has only made about two-thirds of its shooting costs back. Overall, it's expected to lose Warner Bros. roughly $150 million. Ouch.

Verdict: This new King Arthur is nothing if not a bold attempt to reinvent the legend as a superhero, and though Ritchie and star Charlie Hunnam have a commendable stab at it, a disappointingly bland villainous turn by Jude Law and an over-abundance of expository dialogue work against the witty wise-cracks, solid action sequences and killer soundtrack.

Were critics a little harsh on this one? Absolutely, and it has the potential to become a cult favourite in years to come, though it's also not the smooth retooling of a classic text that Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes was.
