Ranking November 2017's Movies From Worst To Best
4. The Killing Of A Sacred Deer
RottenTomatoes Score: 79% (7.7/10)
Box Office: Though no official budget has been disclosed, it's safe to say that it likely cost less than $5 million, in line with director Yorgos Lanthimos' previous film, The Lobster. It's already made $3.5 million at the speciality box office, but like so many buzzed-about, off-kilter indies, it'll do most of its business at home next year.
Verdict: Lanthimos' latest darkly comic thriller is an utterly transfixing film and another ferociously original movie from the singular filmmaker. Colin Farrell gives arguably the best performance of his career as he stares down a grim curse placed on his family, while Dunkirk's Barry Keoghan is also sublimely creepy as the young man forcing his way into Farrell's character's life.
Saying anymore about the plot than that would be criminal, but rest assured that going in with little knowledge of this movie is its own reward: it's packed full of grim, dementedly funny twists and turns, right up to a savage finale that cements it as one of the year's most fearless films.
It certainly won't be for everyone with its slow pace and intentionally stiff line readings, but if you vibe with the style and tone, you'll probably love it.
