Ranking October 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

6. Private Life

Private Life Paul Giamatti
Netflix

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95% (7.7/10)

Box Office: Direct-to-Netflix.

Verdict: Tamara Jenkins' (The Savages) first film in over a decade was well worth the wait, a darkly comical and deeply affecting drama about a middle-aged couple (Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn) desperately attempting to conceive a child.

Giamatti and Hahn are typically brilliant, of course, but Kayli Carter almost steals the show as their drifter step-niece who they convince to become their egg donor.

Free of sentimental drama but quietly poignant instead, Jenkins' observational drama is achingly humanistic and yet another riveting acting showcase for its top-drawer cast. Don't sleep on it.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
