Ranking October 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

13. Smallfoot

Smallfoot 2018
Warner Bros.

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 75% (6.3/10)

Box Office: The $80 million animation opened below expectations, but recently slid into profitability by just barely doubling its budget. A modest success for sure, but home video performance will probably be far more lucrative.

Verdict: A completely formulaic and workmanlike animated film that doesn't really make the most of its neat premise, but is nevertheless elevated by its surprisingly smart message for kids, urging them to question authority as is so relevant in the age of "fake news."

Most of the vocal performances are solid, while the songs are hit-and-miss - especially James Corden's iffy re-working of Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure" - but it generally does just enough to be passably watchable.

You probably won't remember it by the end of the year, but if your kids take even a scrap of its message to heart, then it's done its job.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
