Ranking September 2018's Movies From Worst To Best

1. The Rider

The Rider
Sony Pictures Classics

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 97% (8.4/10)

Box Office: By director Chloé Zhao's own admission this western drama was produced on a shoestring budget - she even cooked the six-person crew's food herself - and it's grossed $3.2 million theatrically. Again, though, VOD's where it's at, and the near-universal acclaim should place it in good commercial stead.

Verdict: Terrific proof you don't need tens of millions of dollars to craft one of the most cinematic and affecting movies of the year, The Rider boasts Oscar-worthy cinematography and a wonderfully empathetic performance from first-time actor Brady Jandreau, whose own life experience poetically mirrors the protagonist's.

As a study of the pursuit of passion at the expense of everything else, Zhao's film is nothing if not an achingly human dissection of what it means to be alive, for all the joy and anguish it brings. It's certainly too low-key for the Oscars, but fingers crossed it fares well at the Independent Spirit Awards.
