Now, there are franchises in the world like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings which are epic in scale and vision and with no regard for anything else at the box-office. Then there is Toy Story.

The reason this is at the top of the heap isn't that it's ostensibly better than Finding Nemo or Inside Out, it's because of what Toy Story means as a whole to an entire generation of people.

Where some of the other films have no flaws whatsoever and a sequel in some cases, Toy Story has four instalments to its name, none of which are in any way less than perfect.

One day somebody will have to ask Pixar how they created four films that add up to a near-perfect RT score of 395%, Toy Story 3 making 98% of that.

Individually, Toy Story 3 was a culmination of everything that had been foretold in the first two, namely that Andy would grow up and outgrow his toys. It's just that nobody was ready for the emotional heft it would bring when it came to pass.

So, when the day came that he did grow up and knew to give the gang away, it meant the end of childhood for so many around the world, it represented something more than a film. It was the end of an epoch, a time that would never return.

What makes it great is that without having to mention the strength of the film in its writing, visuals, or just about anything else, Toy Story 3 reminded all of us as adults to remember when that time came for us to grow up.

Pixar played out our childhoods on-screen for over 15 years and did it better than any other franchise has ever done it. That's why it's number 1.
